The Elephant Man Sculpture Project: Not Animal
Joseph Merrick was born in Leicester, England in 1862. Due to physical deformities, he joined a touring Freak Show and exhibited as the "The Elephant Man “to make a living.
A surgeon Frederick Treves exhibited Merrick at a meeting of the Pathological Society of London in 1884. Merrick and Treves became friends. In 1890 Merrick died in London Hospital at the age of 27.
Our project "Not Animal" expolores options for a sculture to celebrate Joseph Merrick, to raise the profile of his significance in the history of Disability.
